Changing the World through Engineering Thinking

Beyond the Blueprint

——

Explore the Real World of Engineering

Engineering is more than just blueprints and formulas;

it is a bridge connecting us to the real world.

”Beyond the Blueprint“

is a student-led engineering research and media initiative

that brings textbook knowledge

into the work and lives of real engineers,

while offering opportunities to explore media and philosophy.

It aims to make engineering thought-provoking.

More than that, it builds a bridge

between technology and the humanities.

BLUEPRINT

What will we do?

01 Engineer Interview

We’re not satisfied with superficial questions like “What do engineers do?” Instead, you’ll:

1. Interview practicing engineers, researchers, or entrepreneurs from various fields (mechanical, software, civil, bioengineering, etc.).

2. Recapture real-world work scenarios, experiences with failure, career choices, and insights into the industry.

3. Each interview will be compiled into a written transcript + highlights in audio or short video clips.

4. You’ll take on the role of the interviewer, learning how to conduct semi-structured interviews and distill engineering narratives.

02 Engineering Explanation Video

Interviews often mention technical concepts that are hard to understand but sound cool, such as “Finite Element Analysis,” “PID Control,” “Signal Modulation,” and so on. You can:

1. Turn these concepts into 3–5-minute educational animations.

2. The style should be lighthearted and highly visual, suitable for viewers with no prior knowledge.

3. Participate in scriptwriting, storyboarding, animation production, or voice acting.

4. Publish the videos on Bilibili, YouTube, or WeChat Official Accounts to reach a wider audience.

03 Engineering Innovation Challenge

Engineering shouldn’t be confined to laboratories and advanced-level courses

We visit communities, libraries, and K-12 schools to lead hands-on engineering activities for younger students, such as paper bridge load-bearing tests, simple circuits, catapult design, and water filtration experiments, etc.

Combining Engineering with Philosophy

We explore topics such as technology ethics, the relationship between humans and AI, and a sustainable future, and participate in the XIMEI Philosophy Challenge.
